A Meaningful Music Pick from Aija Reke | Arvo Pärt's "Fratres"

Boston Music Project Teaching Artist and violinist Aija Reke reflects on a piece that harkens back to a challenging time in history.

"One of my favourite pieces is 'Fratres' by Arvo Pärt. Pärt is an Estonian composer and his music is meditative, spiritual and makes me think deeply. The name 'Fratres' (brotherhood) represents three Baltic states, which were under the rule of the Soviet Union at the time when this piece was composed. In the piece you can hear the inner conflict and struggle that three Aija Reke

Baltic states were facing during Soviet occupation.

The piece is dedicated to Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer."
