On May 7th, musicians from BMP along with youth lion dancers from Josiah Quincy Elementary helped to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at Boston's City Hall. As part of the event, the City commemorated the 150th anniversary of the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad across North America. There was a 7-panel exhibit highlighting the sacrifices made by Chinese migrant workers in their instrumental efforts to build America’s railroad system that allowed the nation’s commerce to flourish.
Youth musicians from our intermediate Sibelius Orchestra performed Richard Meyer's classic, "Dragon Hunter," along with "Moon Over Ruined Castle," by Japanese composer Rentaro Taki. After their performance, our youth musicians and Teacher Artists had a moment to meet with the Mayor and take a photo. En route to City Hall, our group took a fun photo in front of the iconic 'Boston' sign in Government Center Plaza and was treated to an impromptu performance and history lesson on the 'hurdy gurdy', a stringed instrument that produces sound by a hand crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings, by a street performer and his dog.
