Over the past 5 months, we have had many ‘firsts’ for the Boston Music Project. In March, we hosted our first Facebook livestream concert from the JQES auditorium. A week later, we pivoted our entire in-person music program to continue serving youth and families with daily morning music classes virtually through BMP Online. We launched our first spring break music program in April. And just last week on August 13th, 2020, we celebrated our first summer music program, BMP Creative Summer, with a virtual showcase. All the while, our teaching artists, staff, students and families were working together to continue developing their musical skills, maintaining a sense of community, and demonstrating a level of resilience and creative problem solving that has been truly inspiring. It is because of you and your continued support that we were able to present our Creative Summer program and virtual showcase during these unprecedented times - and for that we thank you.
During the month of July and August, over 60 youth from Boston Public Schools (and even parts of Western Massachusetts!) took part in our Creative Summer programming. Youth musicians composed original chamber music; created musical storybooks; explored the connections between music, visual art, and spoken word; strengthened their instrumental skills through private lessons; created virtual duets; and dropped original EDM and Low-Fi tracks on Sound Cloud.
