During the month of October and November, BMP youth musicians in our advanced elementary school and middle school programs spent five sessions working with Hub New Music via Zoom, learning about the creative process with a goal of composing a series of original musical stories for solo instrument and narration. All five pieces premiered during our December 16th Virtual Showcase and we are excited to share these compositions with you today. Special thanks and shout out to the Celebrity Series of Boston for providing the funding for this project.
The initial plan for this collaboration was intended to take place in April 2020, however with school closures due to COVID-19, we had to postpone this project for a later date. In many ways, this project is an embodiment of the resilience and creative spirit of the Celebrity Series, Hub New Music, and the Boston Music Project, and we are proud to share this collection of works with you today!

Newbold Orchestra Director, Michael Simon, shares the impact that the Hub Lab residency has had on his students.
From the start, Hub New Music has provided a total "hands-on" approach for the students. Everything from creating an original narrative for their piece, to creating and combining new rhythms and melodies that capture that narrative, have allowed the students to discover new insights into the creative process of a composer.
